The installation of stand-alone steel superstructures also enables the solution to be flexible to production requirements. While the end carriages which support the horizontal beam or girder of most overhead cranes typically run on top of the gantry rails, they are located underneath underslung cranes.

An underslung crane is designed to have a low profile, making it ideal for buildings with low ceilings. The hoist and trolley are mounted underneath the bridge beam, which reduces the overall height of the crane.
Since the hoist and trolley are mounted on the bottom flange of the bridge beam, the hook height of an underslung crane is improved compared to other types of cranes.
The underslung crane design provides greater stability compared to other types of overhead cranes. The load is carried by the bottom flange of the bridge beam, which results in less lateral movement and swaying during operation.
Underslung cranes are relatively easy to install since they require minimal headroom and do not require additional supporting steelwork.
